Why just moms/female-identifying parent and caregivers?
We say “moms” in the short name to save on farm sign letters. ;) To be fully clear, you don’t have to go by “mom” to be a valuable (and tired) caregiver. Female-identifying caretakers are typically the ones who experience the most stress and bear the biggest burden, especially when it comes to childcare, including taking extended time off to attend expensive, long uninterrupted writing retreats far from home. While this might not be the case for your home, this IS the case for many, so you’ll understand why we nonetheless limit free farmstay retreats to those who are more shut out of the traditional writing retreat market. You are, of course, welcome to book a farmstay retreat through our Airbnb page if you don’t meet the criteria for a free retreat stay. The Airbnb side of the cottage is what keeps the Unruly Retreat afloat, financially! Finally, if you identify as non-binary, please consider yourself eligible to apply; basically, as long as you aren’t a cismale dude dad or caretake (sorry cismale dude dads!!) you should consider yourself eligible to apply.
Who qualifies as a “caregiver” or “caretaker” if they don’t feel they qualify as a mother?
That’s up to you to make your case in the application. We do not, as a rule though, consider pets to be children, as much as we love our furry friends. Are you a foster parent? You qualify to apply. Are you a grandmother taking care of your kids’ kids? You qualify to apply. Are you the primary caretaker of your own parent? You qualify to apply!
Is the Unruly Retreat free if I am selected?
Yes! 3 people will be recipients of free stays.
How many people will be selected?
The 2019 Freshman Class of the Unruly Retreat will be 3 people.
When will I find out if I won?
The 2019 application process is from March 8 - April 8. On June 1, winners will be announced after being contacted by the retreat director. Retreats will be coordinated on a case-by-case basis and may be used between July 1 2019 - July 1 2020, with an understanding that the farm’s AirBnB needs may be considered in regards to certain highly sought time slots (ie, holiday weekends etc).
How long is the free retreat?
You get 6 FREE days to use as you wish (please try to use at least 2 per stay, also again note that there may be some times that are not automatically available to book; we can be flexible though). If you need more time than that, you can tack on additional paid days via our Airbnb page.
Can I bring my partner?
Whatever situation works best for you is fine; the retreat is intended for you to work on your creative project(s).
Can my kids come? Is babysitting provided?
Of course your kids can come! However, due to insurance liabilities and funding, childcare/babysitting is not provided as part of the retreat at this time. We have 2 twin beds, 1 sleeper sofa, 1 sleeper chair, 1 crib, 1 toddler bed, 1 Moses basket and rocker stand, and 1 pack-n-play for all your youth sleeping needs in addition to the full bed in the main “grownup” bedroom. Additionally, we have board games and art supplies a-plenty to keep them occupied in the loft while you work in the nearby office (and, you know, Netflix, which we ABSOLUTELY rely on in our house for getting shit done, y’all). Maybe someday we can afford to provide a nanny on-site for a set period of time, but it’s not within our means to do so at this time.
Are you ADA Accessible?
We are not presently ADA accessible. There are steps leading up to the cottage. The shower, while walk-in, does have a lip at the edge. The main bedroom is on the ground floor, along with the office, kitchen, and living room, but the loft and children’s rooms are upstairs. We are happy to attempt to meet as many needs as necessary, but cannot unfortunately automatically promise X, Y or Z. But we want to make it possible for you to attend if you win, so seriously. We want to make this work!
Can you pick me up in order for me to get to the farmstay?
I wish we could provide transportation, but our own childcare and work logistics make this impossible. Please factor in your own transportation when planning your trip to, from, and out-and-about the farmstay. We recommend Lyft.
Can I rent out the cottage for my large group retreat?
Can my writing group apply as a unit instead of individually?
Heck, why not? I can’t say you’ll win, but it’s not NOT allowed to apply as a single group (a group entry still counts as a single entry though, and you’ll have the same number of days for the group as you would for a solo person to use).
I’m allergic to animals, what should I do?
This is a farm with animals, including but not limited to: chickens, dogs, cats, horses, etc. While none of these animals reside in the cottage, they are on the property and will not be contained in the main house. Please plan accordingly.
