Can I stay longer than 6 days if I win one of the Class of 2020 slots?

Maybe! We do have scholarship funding thanks to our generous Patreon patrons, so if you are selected for a Class of 2020 slot, you may be asked if you are interested in a longer amount of time as part of that scholarship funding.

Why just “womxn”?

We use “womxn” to be more inclusive of the spectrum of motherhood. Womxn who are parents experience the most stress and bear the biggest burden, especially when it comes to childcare, including taking extended time off to attend expensive, long uninterrupted writing retreats far from home. While this might not be the case for your home, this IS the case for many, so you’ll understand why we nonetheless limit free farmstay retreats to those who are more shut out of the traditional writing retreat market. You are, of course, welcome to book a farmstay retreat through our Airbnb page if you don’t meet the criteria for a free retreat stay. The Airbnb side of the cottage is what keeps the Unruly Retreat afloat, financially! Finally, if you identify as non-binary, please consider yourself eligible to apply; basically, as long as you aren’t a cismale dude dad or caretake (sorry cismale dude dads!!) you should consider yourself eligible to apply.

Who are you?

I’m Hayley DeRoche, author of HELLO LOVELIES! and all-around feminist badass.

Who qualifies as a “caregiver” or “caretaker” if they don’t feel they qualify as a mother?

That’s up to you to make your case in the application. We do not, as a rule though, consider pets to be children, as much as we love our furry friends. Are you a foster parent? You qualify to apply. Are you a grandmother taking care of your kids’ kids? You qualify to apply. Are you the primary caretaker of your own parent? You qualify to apply!

Is the Unruly Retreat free if I am selected?

Yes! Really!

How many people will be selected?

The 2019 Freshman Class of the Unruly Retreat is comprised of 3 people. At this time, we have funding for 5 Class of 2020 residents. We may add more!

When will I find out if I won?

The 2020 application will be open from July 6, 2019 through December 31, 2019. Winners will be contacted in early 2020 to arrange their 2020 stays.

Can my kids come? Is babysitting provided?

Of course your kids can come! However, due to insurance liabilities and funding, childcare/babysitting is not provided as part of the retreat at this time. We have 2 twin beds, 1 sleeper sofa, 1 sleeper chair, 1 crib, 1 toddler bed, 1 Moses basket and rocker stand, and 1 pack-n-play for all your youth sleeping needs in addition to the full bed in the main “grownup” bedroom. Additionally, we have board games and art supplies a-plenty to keep them occupied in the loft while you work in the nearby office (and, you know, Netflix, which we ABSOLUTELY rely on in our house for getting shit done, y’all). Maybe someday we can afford to provide a nanny on-site for a set period of time, but it’s not within our means to do so at this time.

Can I bring my partner?

Whatever situation works best for you is fine; the retreat is intended for you to work on your creative project(s). So take that into consideration when planning.

Can you pick me up in order for me to get to the farmstay?

I wish we could provide transportation (airfare, train fare, Lyft fare, etc) but our own business, childcare and work logistics make this impossible. Please factor in your own transportation when planning your trip to, from, and out-and-about the farmstay. We recommend Lyft.

Can my writing group apply as a unit instead of individually?

Sure! You can also email hayley.deroche@gmail.com directly to talk about a special group rate for your group if you would not like to wait on pins and needles to see if you are selected. Or if you’re able, booking a stay directly through our Airbnb helps pay the bills, so if you CAN pay in full, we would greatly benefit!

Can I bring my pet?

No.
